Oil And Natural Gas Engineering

The oil and gas industry is a progressive and highly technical business, which offers opportunities to young engineers. A petroleum and natural gas engineering graduate may obtain a responsible position with an oil company, establish a consulting business, or become an independent oil producer.

  1. Historical background

The Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Khartoum is at the forefront of petroleum engineering education in Sudan. After the development that has occurred in the oil industry by discovered of Muglad Basin and built the oil export pipeline, the Department was established in 1997 in order to keep up with this new industry in Sudan, with annual intake of undergraduate program is about 30 students. As discovered reserves nearly to 3 billion barrels, the country needs professional engineers to lead this strategic area and the huge reserves that help to grow the Sudan economy. The department graduated hundreds of petroleum engineer’s work inside and outside Sudan in the petroleum industry sector, by offering a great academic learning environment with various research activities and advanced laboratory. Also, the department has established collaboration with the ministry of petroleum and many oil companies in Sudan to connect the department research activates with oil field industry. In 2014 the department started to award M.Sc of Petroleum Engineering by courses.

The table below depicts number of accepted and graduated students of the department for the last ten years. The acceptance started with a small number of ten students in 1997/1998 that doubled in the year 2001/2002 because of the high increase in the discovered reserves by both Greater Nile Petroleum Co (GNPOC) and Petrodar Operating Oil Co.
